International Nurses Day (IND) 12 May 2026 Theme

“Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

The theme for International Nurses Day 2026 delivers a clear and urgent message: the strength of global health systems depends on how effectively nurses are supported and empowered today. Across the world, nurses form the foundation of healthcare delivery. They provide continuous, compassionate care, safeguard vulnerable populations, and respond to emergencies and crises, often while working under considerable pressure. Their role extends beyond bedside care — they promote health, prevent illness, support recovery, and sustain communities during times of uncertainty.

Empowerment lies at the heart of this year’s theme. Nurses can make their greatest life-saving impact when they are provided with safe working environments, fair remuneration, adequate staffing, access to quality education, and opportunities to participate in leadership and policy decisions. True empowerment means removing systemic barriers that limit professional practice and ensuring nurses have the authority, resources, and recognition needed to apply their full knowledge and skills. When nurses are supported in this way, they deliver high-quality, person-centred primary care that improves outcomes and strengthens trust in health systems.

The theme is especially significant at a time when healthcare systems are confronting workforce shortages, rising service demands, climate-related health threats, and the consequences of conflict and disasters. Despite these mounting challenges, nurses continue to uphold the stability and effectiveness of care delivery. However, their contributions are not always fully valued or adequately supported. Strengthening and retaining the nursing workforce is therefore essential for building resilient, equitable, and sustainable health systems worldwide.

This focus reflects the ongoing commitment of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and its President, José Luis Cobos Serrano, who advocates strongly for professional empowerment and leadership development within nursing. Building on the previous International Nurses Day reports, The Economic Power of Care (2024) and Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies (2025), the 2026 theme shifts attention toward harnessing the full potential of nurses to transform healthcare systems. It emphasizes that investing in nurses is not only a workforce issue but also a social and economic priority.

Observed annually on 12 May, the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, International Nurses Day serves as a global call to action. The 2026 theme urges governments, healthcare institutions, and communities to create meaningful reforms that empower nurses, strengthen leadership pathways, and ensure dignified and supportive working conditions.

“Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” is more than a statement — it is a commitment to recognizing the essential value of nurses and investing in their capacity to shape the future of healthcare. When nurses are empowered, health systems grow stronger, communities become healthier, and countless lives are protected and improved.
