THEME OF THIS YEAR ENDING DISCRIMINATION,STIGMA AND PREJUDICE/ TRIPLE ZERO CAMPAIGN 
LEPROSY
Definition:
Is a chronic infectious disease caused by mycobacterium leprae

Other Name:

Leprosy, also known as hansen’s disease

Leprosy Mainly Affects :
v  Skin,
v  Peripheral nerves
v  Mucosal surfaces of the Upper Respiratory tractv  Eyes.


 Incidence:
v  Leprosy cases mostly can be found in india(60% of new cases in india), brazil and indonesia
v  Affected 212 000 more people globally in 2015
v  Leprosy cases 8.9% were children and 6.7% presented with visible deformities
v  16 millionleprosy patients treated over the past 20 years.

Leprosy Transmission:

v  Contact between cases of leprosy and healthy persons
v  Air through droplets from the nose and mouth

Incubation Period:
         A Number Of Years (On Average About 5 Years)

Signs And Symptoms:

A.    skin symptoms such as:
v  Discolored patches of skin, usually flat, that may be numb and look faded (lighter than the skin around)
v  Painless ulcers on the soles of feet
v  Growths (nodules) on the skin
v  Thick, dry skin
v  Painless swelling Mostly  lumps on the face or earlobes
v  Loss of eyebrows or eyelashes
B.Symptoms caused by damage to the nerves are:
v  Muscle weakness or paralysis (especially in the hands and feet)
v  Numbness of affected areas of the skin
v  Enlarged nerves
v  Eye problems that may lead to blindness (when facial nerves are affected)
C.Symptoms in the mucous membranes are:
v  Nosebleeds
v  A stuffy nose

Treatment (Multi-drug therapy (MDT)

A.ADULT - Multi-drug therapy (MDT)

Standard adult treatment regimen for multibacillary(MB)leprosy:
       Treatment Duration: 12 months (12 blister packs)
v  Rifampicin: 600 mg once a month
v  Clofazimine: 300 mg once a month, and 50 mg daily
v  Dapsone: 100 mg daily
Standard adult treatment regimen for paucibacillary (PB)  leprosy:
v  Treatment Duration: six months (six blister packs)
v  Rifampicin: 600 mg once a month
v  Dapsone: 100 mg daily

B.CHILD - Multi-drug therapy (MDT)

Standard child (Ages 10 – 14) treatment regimen for multibacillary (MB) leprosy:
       Duration: 12 months (12 blister packs)
v  Rifampicin: 450 mg once a month
v  Clofazimine: 150 mg once a month, and 50 mg every other day
v  Dapsone: 50 mg daily
Standard child (Ages 10 – 14) treatment regimen for paucibacillary (PB) leprosy:
       Duration: six months (six blister packs)
v  Rifampicin: 450 mg once a month
v  Dapsone: 50 mg daily

v  Women affected by leprosy has 2/3 less surgery than men
III. Zero Discrimination-Abolishing discriminatory laws and practices
v  37% affected by leprosy believe that that disease affect their right of work
v  77 laws against people Diganosed With Leprosy
v  55% due to leprosy people undergoing divorce
